I really wanted to get on the bandwagon this October and join the rest of the world in the pink crusade against breast cancer. Pink jeans, pink cleats, pink pumpkins and my all time favorite...pink Kentucky Fried Chicken bucket. If it's pink right now, its as good as gold. As a small business owner I have been trying to think of ways to contribute my own pink product. It's easier said than done though. First I need some breast cancer T-shirts. I have been so fortunate to not have any close friends afflicted with this terrible cancer. Unfortunately, that means I don't have anyone to make a "pink" T-shirt quilt for. Of course the plan was to make a "pink" T-shirt quilt, stick it on facebook, share a story, sell some more, and donate some proceeds. I think a lot of companies are abusing the "pink" profit and I've been a little conflicted with that in my plan. The real reason everything is pink is to create awareness, not a profit after all. Well, it didn't quite workout for T-shirt Quilt Cafe this year, we had no "pink" cancer T's sent our way. Not all was lost on the philanthropic front this October though, I'm really satisfied with a part of my contribution to the cancer cause for this year. We make all kinds of T-shirt quilts at T-shirt Quilt Cafe but one we did earlier this month has topped my list of the best. I'm so blessed to have a product that truly touches peoples hearts. Not just individuals but entire families. My best friends father-in-law was diagnosed with brain cancer and everyone was in shock. Such a strong man, father and grandfather, kind and brave, admired by all. My best friend wanted to do something to make him happy and ease the pain. She did more than that, she gave everyone a reason to smile and a way to surround 'Poppy' during his illness when they couldn't physically be there. She gathered T-shirts from all the kids and grandkids to make a T-shirt quilt for 'Poppy' to use during and after chemo. His family is always with him, right there in his lap. I know it's not the "pink" cancer thats all the buzz this month it's the "gray" one and it's cancer none the less. I'm not even sure if it has its own special month. Pink or Gray, it's cancer, I'm aware.
